Mastering Pest Control in Commercial Lettuce Farming: Best Practices and Tips

Commercial lettuce farming, whether it is traditional or modern, is a delicate process as lettuce can easily be a target for pests and disease. By having a good pest management plan in place, a grower can better control the growth of their crops for better quality, greater yields, and higher profits. There are several top pests growers should look out for. These are aphids, slugs and snails, whitefly, leaf miners, and more.

Pest Identification and Monitoring

Common pests with commercial lettuce production can be easily spotted and controlled if there is a well-planned and executed Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPM). Prevention is the best control over a grow environment.

Common Lettuce Pests Reference Guide

Pest

Life Cycle

Identification

Aphids

Average Span- 1 Month

Aphids reproduce rapidly causing fast infestations

Live on undersides of leaves, in buds, and on new growth, look for cast skins, honeydew droplets, sooty mold on plants

Slugs/ Snails

Average Span- Up to 5 years depending on species

Eggs take 2 weeks to hatch

Common garden snails have a brown swirl shell and a gray body, slugs are gray or brown in color. Plants will show mucus trails and young plant material will be chewed on the edges.

Whitefly

Average Span- once hatched one month (2 mo. from egg to death)

Whiteflies can be identified by their small white bodies that fly lower to the leaf cover and vegetative growth. Plants will have sticky honeydew, and a black sooty mold on plants. Sickly leaves, and white wax deposits on leaves.

Leaf Miners

Average Span- 5-6 weeks (about 1 and a half months)

1 week to hatch

2-3 weeks larvae

1-2 weeks adult

Leaf miners are damaging to plants only in larval stage. Leaves show trail marks in the leaves from the larvae. Adults are small and light colored.

To respond appropriately to the pest, a grower needs to positively identify the insects and other life found in their growing area. Not every insect is a bad one, but knowing the ones that damage and destroy will help in keeping the quality of plants.

Pest Control Strategies

When it comes to pest management in a greenhouse, there are multiple techniques that can be employed to keep pests under control.  This is through the use of an integrated pest management plan (IPM), which involves a combination of cultural, chemical, and biological strategies. Cultural practices include monitoring plants regularly for signs of pests and disease, maintaining good sanitation, and selecting pest-resistant varieties. Chemical strategies involve the use of pesticides, but care must be taken to avoid overuse which can lead to resistance. Biological controls, such as introducing predator insects like ladybugs to the field or greenhouse to prey on pests, can also be effective. Other techniques include using physical barriers, such as screens or nets, to keep pests out, and using pheromone traps to monitor and capture pests. By adopting a combination of these techniques, a grower can be better prepared for prevention and action to address issues in a greenhouse.

Specific Pest Control Methods for Lettuce Production

Control Recommendations

General Aphid

The use of predatory insects like ladybugs or lacewings, strong water blasts to knock aphids off plants, insecticidal soaps or neem oil can effectively control aphids

Foxglove Aphid

Control is the same as general aphid control methods above with chemical methods being used like Beleaf (flonicamid) and Endeavor (pymetrozine)

Snail and Slug

Grower can closely monitor and use hand picking of slugs/ snails, copper tape or tubing around growing area; chemical methods may include metaldehyde baits (toxic to humans and animals so use with caution- wash all lettuce at harvest)

Whitefly

Control with sticky traps, predatory insects like ladybugs, and neem oils

Leaf miner

Remove infected leaves to rid the plants of the larvae, neem oil applications, removal of adult leaf miners through traps

Depending on the type of chemical or organic approach, as well as the type of crop and operation, adjustments and other recommendations may be needed for the control of pests in a greenhouse or infield lettuce production.
