Syngenta Reward is a fast-acting, non-selective contact herbicide used for the control of a broad spectrum of aquatic and landscape weeds, including emergent and submersed aquatic plants.
Chemical Composition and Formulation
The active ingredient is diquat dibromide at a concentration of 37.3% (equivalent to 2.0 pounds diquat cation per gallon). It is formulated as an aqueous solution and is classified as a Group 22 herbicide (photosystem-I electron diverter) by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC/HRAC Group).
Functional Mechanism and Design
Diquat dibromide is a fast-acting contact herbicide. Upon application, it is rapidly absorbed by plant tissue. It functions by diverting electrons from Photosystem I during photosynthesis, leading to the rapid production of destructive peroxides that rupture cell membranes and desiccate foliage. This results in visible wilting and browning, often within 24-48 hours. It has no residual soil activity and does not translocate significantly within the plant.
Target Applications and Performance
Reward is labeled for the control of annual broadleaf weeds and grasses in non-crop areas, including around commercial and industrial buildings, fence rows, and storage yards. Its primary use is for the control of emerged submersed and floating aquatic weeds such as hydrilla, milfoil, pondweed, duckweed, and algae in lakes, ponds, drainage ditches, and irrigation canals. It is not effective on established perennial weeds from root systems.
Application Specifications and Protocol
For terrestrial non-crop areas, the application rate is 1 to 2 pints per acre in 20 to 100 gallons of water. For aquatic sites, rates vary significantly by target weed species, typically ranging from 0.5 to 2 gallons per surface acre, diluted in at least 100 gallons of water. A non-ionic surfactant is required for terrestrial applications. Aquatic applications may require a marker dye. Application can be made using handheld, ground, or boat-mounted spray equipment. Do not use in waters containing commercially raised fish. The product is rainfast within 30 minutes.
Handling and Safety
This product bears the signal word "DANGER" due to its high oral and inhalation toxicity and its potential to cause irreversible eye damage. Applicators must wear chemical-resistant gloves, protective eyewear, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, shoes, and socks during handling and application. For aquatic use, do not apply where treated water will be used for irrigation, drinking, or domestic purposes until diquat levels are below 0.02 ppm. The re-entry interval (REI) is 24 hours for aquatic uses and 12 hours for terrestrial uses. The EPA registration number is 100-741.
