Quali-Pro Prodiamine Pre-Emergent Herbicide
About this product
Quali-Pro Prodiamine is a selective pre-emergent (preemergence) herbicide for the control of grass and broadleaf weeds in established turfgrasses, lawns, sod and ornamental nurseries, landscape ornamentals, and non-crop areas. The active ingredient, prodiamine (CAS No. 29091-21-2), is a member of the dinitroaniline family and is classified as a WSSA/HRAC Group 3 herbicide, a mitotic inhibitor that prevents cell division in germinating weed seedlings. Because it acts before emergence, it must be applied and activated before target weed seeds germinate; it does not control established, emerged weeds. The line is offered as a flowable liquid concentrate (Prodiamine 4L) and a water-dispersible granule (Prodiamine 65 WDG).
Guaranteed Analysis and Formulation
| Product | Active Ingredient | Other Ingredients | Formulation | A.I. Loading | EPA Reg. No. | Signal Word | Packaging |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prodiamine 4L | Prodiamine 40.8% | 59.2% | Flowable liquid (FL) | 4 lb prodiamine per gallon | 53883-379 | CAUTION | 2.5-Gallon (2 per case) |
| Prodiamine 65 WDG | Prodiamine 65% | 35% | Water-dispersible granule (WDG) | 0.65 lb per lb product | 53883-429 | CAUTION | 5 Pound (6 per case) |
Functional Mechanism
Prodiamine inhibits mitosis (cell division) in the meristematic tissue of germinating seedlings, arresting root and shoot development before the weed emerges from the soil. The compound has low water solubility and low volatility, which keeps it positioned in the upper soil profile within the weed-germination zone rather than leaching away or volatilizing. Activation requires at least 0.5 inch of rainfall or irrigation (or shallow incorporation of 1 to 2 inches for non-turf applications) before seeds germinate and within 14 days of application.
Weed Spectrum
Controls crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, annual bluegrass (Poa annua), henbit, knotweed, common chickweed, spotted spurge, and other annual grasses and broadleaf weeds.
Target Sites
Established turfgrasses (excluding golf course putting greens); lawns and sod nurseries; container, field-grown, and landscape ornamentals; hardwood seedling nurseries; established perennial and wildflower plantings; Christmas tree farms; non-grazed fence rows; and non-crop areas including managed rights-of-way (roadways, roadsides, railways, equipment yards), substations, tank farms, pumping stations, and parking/storage areas.
Application Specifications
| Product | Use Rate | Carrier / Method | Annual Maximum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prodiamine 4L | 0.23 to 1.1 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft (rate varies by turf species and desired control duration) | Minimum 20 gallons/acre (0.5 gal/1,000 sq ft) of water or fluid fertilizer; calibrated low-pressure sprayer with 50-mesh or coarser screens | Do not exceed 48 fl oz/acre per year; do not exceed the maximum labeled rate per turf species |
| Prodiamine 65 WDG | General turf: 0.4 oz product in 0.5 gal water per 1,000 sq ft. Container/field/landscape ornamentals: 0.37 to 0.83 oz per 1,000 sq ft | Agitate 1/4-filled tank before adding; maintain agitation through application | Approx. one 5-lb container per acre (covers ~40,000 sq ft per bag) |
Mixing
Fill the spray tank one-quarter full with clean water (or fluid fertilizer) only, start and verify agitation, then add product and maintain vigorous agitation before and during application. A spray colorant may be added to mark treated areas and minimize skips and overlaps. Flush the system with detergent water after use; do not allow the suspension to dry in the tank.
Use Restrictions and Compatibility
- Do not apply to golf course putting greens.
- Do not apply where annual bluegrass (Poa annua), colonial bentgrass, velvet bentgrass, or dichondra are desired species.
- Non-staining formulation; compatible as a tank-mix partner with fertilizers and iron solutions.
- Rotational plantings: rotate treated nursery/landscape areas only to labeled ornamental species for one year following application unless an indicator-plant safety test (wheat, sorghum, or corn grown to 12 inches with normal roots) confirms safety.
Resistance Management
As a Group 3 (dinitroaniline, mitotic inhibitor) herbicide, rotate with or tank-mix herbicides of a different mode-of-action group where label-permitted, apply at labeled rates, and scout after application to detect early signs of resistance.
Safety and First Aid
- PPE (handlers): long-sleeved shirt and long pants, shoes plus socks. Prolonged or frequently repeated skin contact may cause allergic reactions in some individuals.
- Restricted-entry interval (REI): 12 hours. Early-entry PPE: coveralls, waterproof gloves, shoes plus socks.
- If swallowed: call a poison control center or doctor immediately; sip water if able to swallow; do not induce vomiting unless directed.
- If in eyes: hold eye open and rinse slowly with water for 15 to 20 minutes; remove contact lenses after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing.
- If on skin: remove contaminated clothing; rinse skin for 15 to 20 minutes.
Environmental Precautions
Low solubility in water; not toxic to fish at the limit of solubility, but potentially toxic above that concentration. Do not apply directly to water or to intertidal areas; do not contaminate water when disposing of equipment wash water. Toxic to plants and may affect the forage and habitat of non-target organisms, including pollinators, in adjacent sites; follow drift-reduction directions.
