The most beneficial aspect of the commercial greenhouse is that this structure is able to extend growing times and gives full control over the environment for plants to grow in. This can be excellent for year round growing and the ability to grow groups outside of their growing zone. Control over lighting, temperature, water, media, and air are important aspects of ensuring excellent plant growth and health. One key ingredient for healthy and happy plants is carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide supplementation and control in a greenhouse has many benefits on plant growth and yields. Carbon dioxide is an important part of photosynthesis- an essential plant process. With the use of light energy from either the sun or artificial light sources, CO2 and water is converted into sugars for plants to use and break down in another process called respiration. The difference in the rate of photosynthesis and respiration is based on the overall dry-matter content or growth in the plant. CO2 supplementation increases growth through improved vigor and overall health. For most greenhouse crops, photosynthesis can be increased by about 50 percent with CO2 supplementation in comparison to ambient CO2 levels. Scientifically speaking, to increase CO2 uptake by the stomata of plant leaves, the CO2 levels must be higher outside the plant than inside. Higher concentrations of solutions or in this case CO2 will naturally enter areas of lower concentrations to create balance.

Enrichment of CO2 Levels

There are several methods to balancing and enriching the commercial greenhouse environment with CO2. This can be accomplished through a supply of pure CO2 liquid, combustion of fossil fuels with air heaters, and combustion of fuels with a central burner in combination with a tank for heat storage. When supplementing CO2 there will be the inevitable high and low areas of concentrations of CO2. Circulation is essential in preventing extreme differences in levels of CO2. The most common method of carbon dioxide enrichment is through the burning of fossil fuels. The most common of gases used is natural gas which burns cleaner than other forms of fossil fuels and produces much lower levels of fumes that may be hazardous to health. With the combustion of 1 m3 of natural gas, there is around 1.8kg of carbon dioxide generated for the greenhouse’s growing area. Monitoring levels of CO2 in a greenhouse is another important factor in ensuring proper enrichment for plants to take full advantage of CO2 in the greenhouse. By monitoring all aspects of the greenhouse, a grower is better prepared and able to make decisions that are for the best in the operation. Newer technology also allows not only for the air and various components of the greenhouse environment to be monitored, but also systems can be fully automated to take control in the event that the air or any other environmental factor is not to the desired levels. By introducing automation, a grower can turn focus to other tasks in the greenhouse.
