Stonewool AKA Stonewool: What’s the Benefit for Your Commercial Grow Operation?

cultilene vs grodanOnce widely used solely in the construction industry due to the excellent abilities of insulation, the commercial horticulture industry has integrated the material as a substrate in hydroponic operations. This substrate is known as rock wool. Rock wool goes by many names such as stone wool or mineral wood. However, this material is made the same and has the same characteristics. Rock wool is made from the melting and spinning of molten rock into thin, but strong threads. These threads are layered together into different shapes depending on the desired application in the commercial operation. With the wide crop range that can be grown in rockwool, it is no surprise that the commercial hydroponic industry regards rockwool as a diverse and easily customizable material that can last for seasons. There are several main benefits of using rockwool that make its use better than the traditional media like topsoil or potting soil. The main benefit focuses on water properties. Stonewool has proven improved moisture holding capacities while providing even distribution of water throughout the woolen container. Even with the excellent water retention, the material is still able to provide top notch aeration to the root zones promoting strong growth of roots and in turn the plant. Rockwool is able to be used for many growing seasons with the same performance as the first growing season. The material is naturally sterile and free from pathogens, however, when reusing for the next growing season an operation should sanitize or steam the cubes to ensure no pathogens stick around between uses. Stonewool can also be easily customized into any shape or size to fit the specific crops needs. Even though it is light-weight, it is durable and doesn't break down or decompose due to the characteristics of the stone. With the many benefits of stonewool, the commercial horticulture industry has progressively increased demand for this material. In the industry, there are two major companies that stand out among the crowd for their high quality rockwool products: Cultilene and Grodan.
