Details

MycoApply is a line of mycorrhizal fungi inoculants designed for professional agricultural, horticultural, nursery, and land restoration applications. These products contain living beneficial fungi that establish symbiotic associations with plant roots.

Mycorrhizal fungi colonize plant root systems and extend hyphae into the surrounding soil, effectively functioning as an extension of the root system. This symbiosis provides the host plant with access to water and nutrients—particularly phosphorus—while the fungi receive photosynthetic carbon compounds from the plant.

Biological Background

Endomycorrhizal fungi (also called arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi or AMF) penetrate cortical cells of plant roots to form branched structures called arbuscules where nutrient exchange occurs. These fungi produce extraradical hyphae that explore soil pores inaccessible to root hairs and generate glomalin, a glycoprotein that contributes to soil aggregation.

Ectomycorrhizal fungi form associations primarily with woody plants, creating a dense hyphal sheath around root tips and an intercellular network known as the Hartig net. These fungi are particularly important for nitrogen acquisition in forest ecosystems and protection against root pathogens.

Factors Affecting Mycorrhizal Colonization

Soil Phosphorus Levels: High available phosphorus can suppress mycorrhizal colonization. Plants invest less carbon in fungal symbionts when phosphorus is readily available.

Soil Disturbance: Tillage and cultivation disrupt hyphal networks and reduce native inoculum potential.

Fungicide Applications: Some systemic fungicides can affect mycorrhizal fungi. Contact fungicides generally pose less risk.

Fallow Periods: Extended periods without host plants reduce native mycorrhizal populations.

Storage and Handling
