Onisal is a liquid soil amendment formulated to correct soil salinity by exchanging sodium ions for calcium ions in the clay-humic complex. In sodic or saline-sodic soils, excess sodium causes clay particles to disperse, destroying soil structure, reducing water infiltration, and creating a hostile environment for root development. Onisal provides a concentrated source of soluble calcium, which displaces sodium from cation exchange sites on clay particles. The displaced sodium is then leached below the root zone with normal irrigation or rainfall, while the added calcium promotes flocculation of clay particles, restoring soil porosity, permeability, and tilth. The product has a dark brown appearance, a density of 11.85 lb/gal (1.42 kg/L) at 68°F, and a pH of 3.2 ± 0.4. It contains nitric acid, ammonium calcium salt at a concentration of 17% to 50%. Onisal is available in 2.5 gallon containers with a net weight of 29.6 lbs.
