Khemical Aluminum Sulfate - Granular - 50 Pounds (44/Plt)

About this product

Khemical Aluminum Sulfate is a granular technical-grade aluminum sulfate, supplied in 50-pound bags (44 bags per pallet). It serves two principal functions: as a soil acidifier that rapidly lowers soil pH, and as a coagulant/flocculant for water clarification. In water it hydrolyzes to form aluminum hydroxide and a dilute sulfuric acid solution, producing both its acidifying and its particle-aggregating effects.

Chemical Composition and Properties

PropertyValue
Chemical nameAluminum sulfate
FormulaAl2(SO4)3
CAS No.10043-01-3
Molar mass342.15 g/mol (anhydrous)
AppearanceWhite granular solid
Al2O3 content (typical)Not less than 16%
pH (1% solution)3.0 to 3.5 (acidic)
SolubilityHighly soluble in water
CombustibilityNon-flammable, non-explosive

Functional Mechanism

In solution, aluminum sulfate hydrolyzes to a gelatinous aluminum hydroxide precipitate and dilute sulfuric acid. As a soil acidifier, the released acidity lowers soil pH quickly and predictably. As a water-treatment coagulant, the positively charged aluminum species neutralize the negative surface charge on suspended particles, allowing fine particulates to aggregate into heavy flocs that settle and are removed by filtration. Optimal coagulation occurs in the approximate pH range of 5.5 to 7.5.

Target Applications

  • Rapid lowering of soil pH for acid-loving crops and ornamentals, including pH-driven hydrangea color adjustment.
  • Improvement of soil structure through clay-particle flocculation, enhancing aeration and water infiltration in compacted or fine-textured soils.
  • Phosphorus sequestration to reduce nutrient runoff.
  • Coagulation and clarification of turbid water; turbidity, color, and impurity removal in water and wastewater treatment and pool water.

Application Specifications

Soil application rate is determined by soil test and target pH; because excessive acidification increases aluminum solubility and can inhibit root growth, confirm rates against soil-test recommendations. For water clarification, dose to source turbidity and jar-test results; a representative pool dosage is approximately 20 to 50 grams per 10 cubic meters of water.

Compatibility

Acidic in solution; do not combine with strongly alkaline materials. Avoid contact that would prematurely neutralize the product.

Storage and Handling

Store dry. Minimize dust generation; use eye protection and a dust mask when handling.

Safety and First Aid

Mild irritant. Dust and solutions may irritate eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Flush affected eyes or skin with water; move to fresh air if dust is inhaled.

Environmental Precautions

Lowers the pH of receiving water; avoid uncontrolled discharge to surface water, where pH shift may harm aquatic organisms.
