Grodan Rockwool Grow Blocks provide a systematic range of mineral wool substrates designed for the precise cultivation of specialty crops in controlled environments. As the central component in the Grodan "blocking-on" system, these blocks are engineered to receive seedlings from starter plugs and support robust vegetative and generative growth through harvest. The Grodan Improved product line incorporates advanced wetting agents and optimized fiber structures developed in partnership with Wageningen University in the Netherlands, delivering superior uniformity and control over water content and nutrient delivery for commercial growers.
Technical Specifications and Core Technology All Grodan Improved Gro-Blocks share a foundation in advanced hydrophilic technology, engineered to optimize the physical properties of the stone wool substrate. This technology ensures uniform distribution of water content (WC) and electrical conductivity (EC) throughout the entire block volume. The advanced wetting agent provides rapid initial saturation and improved "re-wettability," eliminating dry spots and allowing growers to steer the crop's water concentration more efficiently. The optimized wool structure promotes faster rooting-in, provides a consistent growing medium that maintains its structure and firmness throughout the crop cycle, and enables more sustainable use of water and nutrients by allowing full exploitation of the entire substrate volume. This combination results in a well-defined root system with higher capacities for water and nutrient uptake, forming the basis for vigorous, uniform crop development.
Product Line Specifications and Applications The Grodan Improved line is offered in a graduated sizing system, with model numbers often corresponding to block height in centimeters and names indicating relative volume.

4" x 4" x 2.5" (10 x 10 x 6.5 cm)
Compact block for high-density planting and short-cycle crops.
GR7.5 Medium
4" x 4" x 3.1" (10 x 10 x 7.5 cm)
Standard medium block, often with a pre-cut hole for starter plugs.
GR10 Large
4" x 4" x 4" (10 x 10 x 10 cm)
High-volume, all-purpose block for a wide range of crops; available in strips.
Jumbo
6" x 6" x 4" (15 x 15 x 10 cm)
Supports larger plants; irrigation with two drip stakes recommended.
Hugo
6" x 6" x 6" (15 x 15 x 15 cm)
High-volume block for long-cycle, large plants; two drip stakes recommended.
GR40 Uniblock
8" x 8" x 4" (20 x 20 x 10 cm)
Large surface area block, typically without a hole for direct-seeding or custom placement.
Big Mama
8" x 8" x 8" (20 x 20 x 20 cm)
Maximum-volume block for full-term growth of the largest plants without a slab.
Standardized Use Protocol for Grodan Gro-Blocks A precise initialization process is critical for achieving the performance benefits of Grodan substrates.
Saturation: Blocks must be saturated with a nutrient solution at an approximate EC of 1.5 and pH of 5.5. A coarse spray or brief submersion for up to two minutes is recommended to achieve full saturation without over-soaking.
Initial Measurement: Weigh the block immediately after saturation to establish a baseline "wet weight". This weight is the reference point for managing irrigation throughout the crop cycle.
Transplanting: A well-rooted seedling from a Grodan starter plug is inserted into the pre-formed hole of the saturated block.
Irrigation Initiation: The first irrigation event should commence when the block's water content reaches 55% to 65% of its initial saturated weight.
Ongoing Irrigation: Employ a pressure-compensated drip irrigation system. A single 0.5-1.0 GPH dripper is standard for GR10 blocks, while Jumbo and Hugo blocks require two drippers. The irrigation volume should be 3% to 6% of the total block volume per watering event.
Commercial Packaging and Sourcing These products are supplied in bulk, commercial-grade packaging, typically without retail wrapping or labeling. Cases are consolidated onto pallets for high-volume operations, with specific quantities varying by product. For example, the GR6.5 Small ships 216 blocks per case, with 12 cases per pallet (2,592 blocks total), while the GR10 Large ships 144 blocks per case, with 12 cases per pallet (1,728 blocks total). The blocks are also available in ultra-bulk "pallet-only" configurations, such as a pallet of 2,448 GR6.5 Small blocks or 1,548 GR10 Large blocks, for the largest commercial facilities.
