Details
GroClarity IPM Insights Settle Plate is a passive microbial air monitoring device designed to detect airborne mold and other microbes in agricultural and facility environments. It consists of a settle plate that naturally collects airborne microorganisms as they fall from the air. After exposure, the plate is sealed and incubated to reveal where mold and other pathogens are accumulating. Early, high counts serve as the first and most important indicator of microbial risk; species identification is not required for risk detection. The system requires no advanced training and delivers fast results. The Settle Plate is available in a case of 4 plates.
Functional Mechanism
Settle plates operate on the principle of gravitational settling. Airborne particles, including fungal spores and bacterial cells, are continuously deposited onto the nutrient agar surface of the open plate during a defined exposure period. After exposure, the plate is sealed and incubated under conditions that promote microbial growth. Each viable particle that lands on the agar forms a colony-forming unit (CFU), which becomes visible as a discrete colony. The number of colonies correlates with the concentration of viable airborne microorganisms in the facility during the exposure period. Higher counts indicate greater airborne bioburden and elevated risk of crop contamination.
Target Applications and Performance
The settle plate system is designed for routine facility air evaluations on a weekly or monthly schedule. Specific applications include:
-
Monitoring during high-risk environmental changes such as construction, HVAC repairs, or cleaning cycles
-
Verification prior to harvest or pre-processing
-
Early detection to pinpoint when and where to conduct costly PCR testing
-
Tracking effectiveness of remediation or sanitation programs
The system is intended to provide low-cost visibility into microbial risks before they escalate, support regulatory compliance, and prevent crop loss.
Application Specifications and Protocol
-
Exposure: Open settle plate in the target environment for a defined period (see manufacturer instructions for specific exposure times)
-
After exposure: Seal the plate
-
Incubation: Incubate under appropriate conditions (temperature and duration specified in manufacturer instructions)
-
Reading: Count visible colonies; early, high counts indicate elevated risk
Full instructions are available from the manufacturer. Summarized instructions are also available.
Optional Accessory: GroClarity IPM Insights Surface Swab
The Surface Swab is available for testing surfaces including tables, tools, walls, floors, and equipment. Swabs provide a more complete contamination picture when paired with settle plates.
Use Cases
-
Routine weekly or monthly facility air evaluations
-
High-risk environmental changes (construction, HVAC repairs, cleaning cycles)
-
Verification prior to harvest or pre-processing
-
Early detection to pinpoint when and where to conduct costly PCR testing
-
Tracking effectiveness of remediation or sanitation programs
Limitations
Species identification is not required for risk detection. Early, high counts are the primary indicator of risk. The test is designed as a screening tool to identify when and where further testing (such as PCR) may be warranted.
Storage and Handling
Store according to manufacturer instructions. Do not use expired plates. Keep sealed until ready to use to prevent contamination.
