FMC Quicksilver T&O is a contact herbicide with minimal residual activity, providing selective post-emergence control of broadleaf weeds and silvery thread moss (Bryum argenteum) in turfgrass. It is formulated with the active ingredient carfentrazone-ethyl.
Chemical Composition and Formulation
This product contains 21.3% carfentrazone-ethyl as its active ingredient, with the remainder consisting of other ingredients, including petroleum distillates. The formulation is a liquid with a concentration of 1.9 pounds of active ingredient per gallon. It carries EPA Registration Number 279-3265 and has a "Caution" signal word. The herbicide is classified under FRAC Group 14, functioning as a protox inhibitor.
Functional Mechanism
Quicksilver T&O is an aryl triazolinone herbicide that acts by inhibiting chlorophyll synthesis in susceptible green plants. This process, which requires light, leads to the production of metabolic byproducts that disrupt plant cell membranes. The active ingredient rapidly penetrates plant cells, and symptoms on foliage of susceptible weeds may become apparent within 24 hours or less of application. Complete desiccation and death of target weeds typically occurs within 7 to 14 days after application. The product is rainfast within one hour after application.
Target Applications and Performance
This product is designed for use on various turfgrass species, including cool-season grasses like creeping bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescues, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass, as well as warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass, bahiagrass, centipedegrass, seashore paspalum, St. Augustinegrass, and zoysiagrass. It is effective in both cool and warm environmental conditions and is gentle on these grasses, even in newly seeded, sodded, or sprigged areas.
Quicksilver controls a broad spectrum of over 50 broadleaf weeds, including black medic, carpetweed, henbit, nightshade, pigweed, purslane, and wild buckwheat. It also provides selective post-emergence control of silvery thread moss on golf course greens and tees consisting of bentgrass. Research has demonstrated that two applications of this product can control 90% of moss. It is compatible for tank mixing with any post-emergence herbicide to increase the speed of kill and expand the weed control spectrum.
Application Specifications and Protocol
For general weed control, apply Quicksilver T&O at rates of 1.0 to 2.1 fluid ounces of product per acre (0.023 to 0.048 fluid ounces per 1000 square feet) for control of seedling winter and summer annual weeds up to 4 inches tall. For controlling silvery thread moss, apply at a rate of 6.7 fluid ounces of product per acre (0.154 fluid ounces per 1000 square feet), followed by a second application two weeks later. The use of a non-ionic surfactant at a rate of 0.25% volume/volume is recommended in the spray mix for enhanced effectiveness.
For spot treatments using hand-held or backpack sprayers, mix 0.030 fluid ounces (0.9 milliliters) of product in one to two gallons of water to treat 1000 square feet. The product can be applied in spray volumes ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 gallons per 1000 square feet, with higher volumes recommended for dense weed populations or where uniform coverage is difficult.
Use Restrictions and Compatibility
This product is most effective when applied to actively growing winter and summer annual seedlings. Extremes in environmental conditions may affect activity; under dry or cool conditions, herbicidal symptoms may be delayed, while under warm, moist conditions, symptoms may accelerate. Weeds hardened by drought or high temperatures are less susceptible, and higher rates are recommended under such conditions. Application to bentgrass turf under stress from extreme temperatures, disease, insect infestation, or moisture extremes may cause transitory yellowing. Poa annua may be damaged at rates greater than 2.0 fluid ounces per acre.
