About this product

Khemical Nitric Acid 38% Baume (BE) is a technical-grade aqueous nitric acid solution graded at 38 degrees Baume, supplied in a 330-gallon intermediate bulk container (IBC tote). It is a strong mineral acid and oxidizer used in fertigation, where it both acidifies irrigation water and supplies nitrate nitrogen, and in the descaling and clean-in-place maintenance of irrigation and water-handling systems.

Definition

The Baume (Be) scale is a hydrometer-based density scale used to express acid concentration; for liquids denser than water, a higher Baume reading indicates a higher specific gravity and concentration.

Chemical Composition and Properties

PropertyValue
Chemical nameNitric acid (aqueous solution)
FormulaHNO3
CAS No.7697-37-2
Concentration38 degrees Baume
AppearanceColorless to yellowish liquid
SolubilityMiscible with water in all proportions
Hazard class8, Corrosive; also an oxidizer
UN numberUN1760
Container330-gallon IBC tote

Functional Mechanism

Nitric acid dissociates in water to lower pH and neutralize bicarbonate alkalinity, while supplying nitrate (NO3-) as directly plant-available nitrogen. In system maintenance, it dissolves carbonate and mineral scale in lines, filters, and emitters.

Target Applications

  • Fertigation: simultaneous acidification of irrigation water and supply of nitrate nitrogen, at bulk volume for large operations.
  • Reduction of irrigation-water pH and neutralization of bicarbonate alkalinity.
  • Descaling and clean-in-place maintenance of irrigation and water-handling systems.

Application Specifications

Meter into the water stream to the target pH using acid-compatible bulk injection equipment, accounting for the nitrogen contribution in the overall nutrient program. When diluting, always add acid slowly to water, never water to acid.

Use Restrictions and Compatibility

A powerful oxidizer that may intensify fire. Incompatible with bases, metals (corrodes steel and most metals), organic materials, reducing agents, alcohols, amines, and acetic acid. Contact with metals and organics can evolve corrosive and toxic gases. Store and handle in compatible materials.

Storage and Handling

Store locked up in a cool, well-ventilated area away from organics, metals, bases, and oxidizable materials, within acid-resistant secondary containment sized for the tote. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, chemical splash goggles or face shield, and protective clothing; provide ventilation to control vapors and mists.

Safety and First Aid

  • Causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage (H314); harmful if inhaled (H332). Contact stains skin yellow and produces deep burns.
  • Inhalation of vapors or nitrogen-oxide gases is hazardous and may be fatal; symptoms including pulmonary edema can be delayed 24 to 48 hours and are aggravated by exertion.
  • Eye contact: rinse with plenty of water for 15 to 20 minutes; seek immediate medical attention.
  • Skin contact: remove contaminated clothing; rinse for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Inhalation: move to fresh air, keep at rest, and obtain medical attention; monitor for delayed respiratory effects.
  • Ingestion: do not induce vomiting; seek immediate medical attention.

Firefighting Measures

Non-combustible but a strong oxidizer that can intensify fire. Corrosive nitrogen oxides are evolved on heating or contact with metals and organics. Firefighters require chemical protective clothing and positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus.

Environmental Precautions

Harmful pH shift and nitrogen loading in receiving water; nitrogen-oxide gases may form during spills. Prevent uncontrolled discharge and isolate down-wind areas during large releases.

Compliance

Industrial exposure to nitric acid vapors and mists is classified by IARC as a known human carcinogen. OSHA PEL is 2 ppm (5 mg/m3). Shipped as UN1760, Corrosive, Hazard Class 8.
