Details

BioWorks EpiShield® O is a non-selective, contact-acting miticide and insecticide formulated for professional use in controlled-environment agriculture, nurseries, and outdoor crops. It is classified as a biochemical pesticide under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's guidelines and qualifies for an exemption from EPA registration under FIFRA 25(b), pertaining to minimum-risk pesticides. The product is defined by a proprietary formulation of botanical essential oils engineered for high efficacy at significantly reduced application volumes.

Chemical Composition and Formulation
The active ingredients are precisely defined botanical extracts: 15% Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita) and 10% Clove Oil (Syzygium aromaticum). The remaining 75% of the formulation consists of inerts, which include sodium lauryl sulfate (a surfactant), soap, polyglyceryl oleate, vegetable oil, oleic acid, and citric acid. This engineered blend results in a concentrated liquid emulsion with a 12-month shelf-life at room temperature. The formulation's key technical achievement is its high potency relative to oil content; it delivers equivalent or superior pest mortality with up to 45 times less total oil delivered to plant surfaces compared to conventional horticultural oil products, directly mitigating the risk of phytotoxicity.

Mode of Action
EpiShield operates via physical, contact-based mechanisms of action, resulting in acute mortality of target pests. Upon thorough spray coverage, the formulation induces:

  • Paralysis: The aromatic compounds in the essential oils, such as eugenol in clove oil, interfere with neuronal signal transmission.

  • Suffocation: The oil and surfactant mixture disrupts the spiracular and tracheal systems of insects and mites, impeding respiratory function.

  • Desiccation: The formulation breaks down the protective wax layer of the arthropod cuticle, leading to rapid dehydration.
This multi-modal, physical action negates the potential for target pests to develop biochemical resistance, a significant advantage for long-term Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies.

Target Pests and Application Specifications
The product is labeled for the suppression and control of key soft-bodied arthropod pests: Twospotted Spider Mites (Tetranychus urticae), aphids (including Cannabis aphid, Phorodon cannabis), thrips, whiteflies, and mealybugs.

Application Guidelines:

  • Use Rate: The standard foliar application rate is 9 fluid ounces per 100 gallons of water. For severe infestations, the rate can be increased to 12 fluid ounces per 100 gallons. This represents a 10x to 28x lower use rate compared to traditional horticultural mineral oils. For example, to treat 500 gallons of spray solution, only 1/3 gallon of EpiShield concentrate is required, whereas 5 gallons of comparable products may be needed.

  • Dipping Application: For transplant dips, the rate is 2.7 mL per gallon of water.

  • Application Protocol: Full canopy coverage is critical for efficacy. Applications must be made when relative humidity is below 90% and ambient temperatures are below 90-95°F (32-35°C) to prevent potential plant stress. The product should not be mixed with sulfur-based treatments.

Efficacy Data
Independent and internal trial data substantiate performance claims. A key metric is up to a 53% higher mortality rate for mites and aphids compared to similar oil-based products.

Representative Trial Results:

Trial Subject Product & Rate Result
Cannabis Aphid on Hemp EpiShield (Low Rate) 74.7% mortality after 3 treatments
Cannabis Aphid on Hemp EpiShield (High Rate) 81.9% mortality after 3 treatments
Twospotted Spider Mite on Lima Beans EpiShield (Low & High Rates) >90% mortality with 10-28x lower rate vs. horticultural oil

Regulatory and Safety Profile
EpiShield holds a zero-hour Restricted Entry Interval (REI) and a zero-day Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI). This means greenhouse operations or harvest activities require no waiting period after application. The product is exempt from tolerance limits for pesticide residues. It presents minimal risk to human health and the environment, requiring only minimal personal protective equipment (PPE) during handling and posing no significant risk to non-target organisms when used as directed. It is compatible for rotation or tank-mixing within IPM programs and does not require specialized spray equipment.

Available Formulations
EpiShield is commercially available in the United States in the following sizes: 2 oz, 8 oz, 36 fl oz, and 2.5-gallon containers.
